Career Pathways

Showcasing real-life career pathways of people in the environmental sector.

How to use the resource

Our Career Path-ers

We reached out to people with green jobs and asked them to share their career path with us. In our questionnaire, we focused on two main areas:

Career Beginnings

Not everyone is aware that environmental careers are an option, or they do not know where to find them. These questions focus on how our path-ers came to be interested in green jobs and how they navigated their first steps.

Career Path and Skills

These questions focus on what their career path look like and what skills they have used both inside and outside the environmental sector. We have asked them to share their barriers and opportunities, talk about if their path was linear, and to share any advice they have for you.

The Resource

We took all the stories and grouped them into categories to help you find the type of path you want to hear about. You can also find a full list of all the stories at the bottom of the page. Browse through the categories, or try out our quiz to help you choose a story.

Our Job Changers are people who have had a number of different roles in their career. The stories often contain:

  • non-linear pathways
  • multiple sectors
  • transferrable skills

You can find some examples of Job Changers below.

Our Career Switchers are people who have started out in one sector or field of education and have pivoted to working in the environment. The stories often contain information about:

  • non-linear pathways
  • transferrable skills
  • finding an interest or knowledge of environmental jobs later in life
  • going back to retrain or study

You can find some examples of job switchers below.

Our path-ers that have stories about learning on the job have taken a number of different career paths. They include:

  • People with no or delayed experience of going to university
  • People who have learned from doing internships
  • People who used transferrable skills to make it into the sector and learn from there

Some examples are included below.

There are a number of well-known, potential barriers to entering the environmental sector. Many of our path-ers have shared stories with us about how they have dealt with barriers in their path including:

  • having no knowledge of environmental careers or the environment
  • overcoming barriers placed in front of them because of mental or physical health
  • lack of self-belief
  • a lack of mentorship or role models in the sector

You can find some of these stories below.

Many of our path-ers enjoy doing creative work and some have managed to take that creativity and make it part of their job, or fit alongside it. You can find some examples of this below.

One of the biggest problems in accessing the environmental sector is the expectation of doing lots of free work to land your first job. While we need to fix this problem, there our path-ers have a number of stories of how volunteering has benefitted them, or how they have done it in a sustainable way.

Find some examples of these below.

A number of our path-ers have become leaders in their field or organisation after various experiences within and without the environmental sector.

Find some examples below.

A number of our path-ers have had a real influence on the jobs they are doing. These include people who:

  • have created a role within their organisation
  • do freelance work either all or part of the time
  • have used hobbies and interests to help them get jobs in the sector

You can find examples of these below.

Some of our path-ers have stuck on the course towards academia, but haven't always followed the smoothest path.

Find out more below.

Many of our path-ers have used their transferrable skills in their work, but a few of them talk how they think these skills got them one of their jobs in the environment sector. Find some examples below.
